6 skincare mistakes you should avoid in 2024 for better skin
According to LILIXIR's skincare formulator, these are the main six skincare mistakes that you should avoid in 2024 for a better looking skin.
Lilia Ivanov, a certified Organic and Natural Skincare Formulator, also certified in Organic Cosmetic Science, Natural Cosmetic Preservation and Cosmetic Stability Testing, says that generally skincare should be tailored to an individual's skin needs.
These are the six common skincare mistakes everyone should stop doing in 2024, as soon as possible, she said.
1. Not using sunscreen
LILIXIR Founder sys that it is extremally important to wear sunscreen everyday with a sun protection factor of at least 30SPF to avoid sun damage, which has been proven to be the number one cause of skin aging and dark spots.
You should be wearing sunscreen not only when you're exposed directly to the sun for a log period, but all the time. The UV rays pass thought the clouds, rain or any other weather conditions.
You can also use a moisturizer or a foundation with SPF, but these won't protect enough. Ideally they should be added on top of your sunscreen.
2. Not using a targeted serum for your specific skincare concern
According to LILIXIR, serums are concentrated therapeutic treatments!
They target one skincare concern at a time and provide concentrated solutions to solve that problem. They contain high-quality active ingredients which have a marked effect on the physical appearance of the skin.
Example of facial serums are:
- hydrating, these serums include active hydrating ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, Glycerin, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, etc.
- anti-aging, these serums contain cosmeceuticals with anti-aging properties such as Retinol, Bakuchiol, Ceramides, Vitamin C, etc.
- skin-enlightening, these serums are dedicated to tackle the skin pigmentation and contain ingrédients like: Arbutin, Kojic acid, Niacinamide, etc.
- natural oil-based serums, such as LILIXIR Ageless Collection, are made from specialized high-performance carrier oils, fast-absorbing "dry" oils and a blend of aromatic essential oils as well as anti-aging essential oils and oil-based cosmeceutical extracts, such as Vitamin E.
Oil based face serums are ubiquitous products in anti-aging skincare lines because they really work, and they work fast. The oils can penetrate the top layer of the skin and help strengthen its barrier function.

3. Using the wrong facial cleanser, over cleansing or not using a cleanser at all
Cleaning your skin twice a day is essential.
Sometimes clean water is insufficient to completely wash away all dirt, filth, and molecules of dead skin.
Some people like to double cleanse or use an oil cleanser first.
Use an oil cleanser first, followed by a foam, gel, oil-to-milk, cleansing lotion, or any other form of cleanser you choose.
You need to switch to a softer cleanser if your curent cleanser is drying out or smearing your skin since it is too strong for you. We do not advise using soap because it typically has drying effects throughout the surfactant process and occasionally results in acne and irritation.
Avoid harsh face washes and continue to search for the one that best meets your skin's needs.
Over-exfoliating skin with either chemical or physical exfoliators more than three to four times a week can compromise the skin barrier, resulting in redness, irritation, and dryness.
4. Using too many products at the same time
People should keep skincare regimens as simple as possible in 2024. A cleanser, a moisturizer, a serum and sunscreen are a must.
Additionally, people should choose skincare products based on their skin's needs, says LILIXIR. Using more then 10 skincare products at the same time could be too much and have the reverse effect.
People with acne or dark spots should seek serums dedicated for these specific concerns. They need to pay attention to active ingredients or exfoliators, that could be too harsh on their skin and irritate it instead.
People with dry or dull skin should look for facial oil based serums, balms or heavy moisturizers.
5. Using skincare products containing fragrance if you have certain skin conditions
Avoid using fragranced skincare products if you have dry skin, acne, or rosacea.
The overall strength of the skin's barrier function and skin health will be improved by a barrier repair agent. Inflammatory symptoms that are linked to decreased epidermal function may also be diminished by it.
People with red, irritated skin should use a moisturizer that contains ingredients like shea butter, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid or oatmeal, which can all help to repair and restore a "compromised skin barrier."
Bubble baths should also be avoided by people who are prone to dry skin because they can cause the skin to become dry and irritated, especially if they contain fragranced items.
6. Using make-up wipes
In 2024, makeup wipes should be avoided since they frequently contain perfumes, alcohol and surfactants that you don't usually rinse off when you're done. This can be "harsh on the skin," it can dry it out and sensitize, and are "not so good" at removing makeup.
Make-up wipes might not completely cleanse the skin, and it could end up actually clog your pores.
Besides that, they are single use only, so not sustainable or good for the environment. At LILIXIR, we put a severe accent on sustainability and we are trying to increase awareness about that as much as possible.
Instead, we advise "double cleaning," which is using a water-based hydrating cleanser as a second step to gently remove any leftover dirt after removing makeup with an oil-based cleanser or cleansing balm in the first phase.
The grime accumulated during the day, sunscreen, and makeup can be gently removed with a double cleanse.
