We all have been there – you're rummaging through your beauty cabinet, and you come across that half-used moisturizer or that forgotten tube of lipstick.
The thought crosses your mind: "Can I still use this, or should I toss it?" The debate over the use of expired skincare and beauty products is a common one, and it's crucial to consider the scientific perspective to make an informed decision. In this blog post, we'll explore the research findings, the pros and cons, and provide insights into why you should pay close attention to product expiration dates.
Log into your LILIXIR Account and verify the expiration dates of your LILIXIR skincare products ordered in the past.
The Science Behind Expiration Dates of Skincare
Skincare and beauty products have expiration dates for a reason. These dates are determined through rigorous testing to ensure product safety and efficacy. But why should you adhere to them?
Over time, active ingredients in skincare products may degrade, making them less effective. For instance, antioxidants like vitamin C are known to become less potent with exposure to air and light.
Expired products can harbor harmful bacteria and microbes. The preservatives in your beauty products help protect them from contamination, and these preservatives may lose their efficacy over time.
Expired products can undergo changes in texture, color, and smell, indicating that they are no longer safe to use.
The Pros and Cons of Using Expired Skincare Products
It might surprise you that there are a few situations where using expired products can be acceptable:
If a product shows no signs of degradation, texture change, or unusual smell, it may still be safe to use. However, this is a case-by-case scenario and not a general rule.
In a pinch and without a suitable replacement, using an expired product might be better than nothing. However, this should be a last resort.
The use of expired products can lead to skin irritation, allergies, and breakouts. Damaged ingredients may cause adverse reactions.
Expired products are unlikely to deliver the results you expect, as active ingredients lose their potency.
If you're using expired sunscreen, you're putting your skin at risk of sun damage. Sunscreens can lose their effectiveness over time.
Smart Practices for Skincare Product Management
To maintain a healthy skincare routine and ensure you're making the most of your products, consider adopting some smart practices:
Opt for smaller-sized skincare and beauty products if you're concerned about not using them up before they expire. Smaller sizes reduce the risk of wasting product and allow you to finish them within their recommended shelf life.
A key strategy is to ensure you use a product completely before its expiration date. This not only ensures product efficacy but also maximizes the value of your purchase.
Periodically assess your skincare and beauty product collection, ideally every six months. Check for any changes in texture, color, or smell, and discard any products that have passed their expiration date. Maintaining a well-organized skincare inventory can help you stay on top of product shelf life and prioritize the health of your skin.
Regularly reviewing your skincare stock every six months and eliminating expired products is an essential practice for maintaining an effective and safe skincare routine.
Over time, skincare products can lose their potency, become less effective, or even develop harmful properties after their expiration dates. By routinely assessing your inventory and disposing of expired items, you ensure that you are only applying products that will deliver the intended benefits to your skin.
Fresh Skincare Products Offer Maximum Results
This not only maximizes the results you achieve from your skincare regimen but also minimizes the risk of potential adverse reactions or issues associated with the use of outdated products. So, remember to clear out the old to make room for the new, fresh, and effective skincare items in your collection.
By adopting these practices, you'll not only maximize the benefits of your skincare products but also contribute to a more sustainable and efficient beauty routine.
Remember that fresh, well-preserved products like LILIXIR Serums are the foundation of healthy, glowing skin, and these practices will help you get the most out of your beauty investments.
The Benefits of Sampling Skincare Products
Sampling skincare products before investing in full-sized versions offers several advantages. First and foremost, it allows you to test the product's compatibility with your skin. This preliminary trial helps you avoid potential allergic reactions or adverse effects and ensures that the product aligns with your specific skin type and concerns.
Secondly, samples let you evaluate a product's performance over a short period. You can assess whether it addresses your skincare needs, such as providing hydration, reducing wrinkles, or brightening your complexion. This firsthand experience helps you determine if the product lives up to its claims, saving you from committing to a full-sized product that might not meet your expectations.
Lastly, samples are not always an eco-friendly option. Be mindful for those packed in plastic or other not recyclable materials.
They generate less waste and reduce the risk of throwing away unused products that have exceeded their shelf life. Choosing samples wisely can be a cost-effective and sustainable way to find the ideal skincare regimen tailored to your unique requirements.

In the ever-evolving world of skincare, new ingredients are constantly emerging, promising to revolutionize the way we combat aging and achieve healthy, radiant skin. Two such ingredients that have captured attention are bakuchiol and retinol.
While both aim to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and promote youthful skin, they do so through different mechanisms. In this blog post, we'll delve into the science behind bakuchiol and retinol, their benefits and drawbacks, and provide guidance on which one might be better suited for your skincare needs.
Bakuchiol is a plant-derived compound extracted from the seeds of the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia). It's often hailed as a natural alternative to retinol due to its potential anti-aging properties. Some research suggests that bakuchiol possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, making it effective in reducing fine lines, improving skin elasticity, and promoting collagen production. One significant advantage of bakuchiol is that it is generally well-tolerated by those with sensitive skin, which can be a concern with retinol.
Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, is a well-established and extensively studied ingredient in the realm of skincare. It's known for its ability to enhance cell turnover, stimulate collagen production, and diminish the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Decades of research have proven the effectiveness of retinol in addressing multiple signs of aging.
What is the difference between Retinol and Bakuchiol?
Retinol and bakuchiol are two skincare ingredients that have gained significant attention in the realm of anti-aging and skincare. While both aim to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and promote youthful skin, they differ in their sources, mechanisms of action, and potential side effects. Let's explore the key differences between retinol and bakuchiol:
Retinol: Retinol is a synthetic derivative of vitamin A. It is widely used in skincare products for its proven efficacy in addressing various signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.
Bakuchiol: Bakuchiol is a natural compound derived from the seeds of the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia). It has gained popularity as a natural alternative to retinol due to its potential anti-aging benefits.
Retinol: Retinol works by promoting cell turnover and increasing the production of collagen. It stimulates skin cell regeneration, revealing newer and smoother skin layers. Retinol also helps in improving skin texture and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Bakuchiol: Bakuchiol also promotes cell turnover and collagen production, but its mechanism of action is slightly different from retinol. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that contribute to its anti-aging effects.
Retinol: Retinol is considered the gold standard in skincare due to its extensive research and proven efficacy. It has been studied for decades and is known to deliver visible improvements in skin texture, fine lines, and wrinkles.
Bakuchiol: While promising, bakuchiol's research is relatively newer compared to retinol. Some studies suggest that bakuchiol can provide similar benefits to retinol, such as reducing wrinkles and promoting collagen production.
Retinol: Retinol is known to cause skin sensitivity, redness, dryness, and peeling, especially when first introduced to a skincare routine. Individuals with sensitive skin may find retinol challenging to tolerate, and it often requires a gradual introduction.
Bakuchiol: Bakuchiol is generally well-tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive skin. It is less likely to cause irritation and sensitivity compared to retinol, making it an appealing option for those who cannot tolerate the side effects of retinol.
Retinol: Retinol can increase skin's sensitivity to the sun. It is recommended to use retinol products at night and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day to protect the skin.
Bakuchiol: Bakuchiol does not increase sun sensitivity to the same extent as retinol. However, it's still advisable to use sunscreen regularly to maintain skin health.
Retinol: Retinol is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to its potential to cause birth defects.
Bakuchiol: Bakuchiol is considered a safer alternative during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it lacks the potential risks associated with retinol.

Scientific Research: A Closer Look to Bakuchiol and Retinol
Both bakuchiol and retinol have garnered attention in scientific studies. A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology (2018) investigated the effects of bakuchiol and retinol on wrinkles and pigmentation. The results showed that bakuchiol reduced wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation while being well-tolerated by participants.
On the other hand, numerous studies, such as one published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (2019), have demonstrated retinol's efficacy in improving fine lines, uneven skin tone, and overall skin texture.

Skin Sensitivity: If you have sensitive skin, bakuchiol may be a gentler option, as it tends to cause fewer irritation concerns compared to retinol.
Immediate Results: If you're seeking rapid results, retinol's proven track record makes it a go-to ingredient.
Long-Term Efficacy: Retinol has been extensively researched for decades, while bakuchiol is a newer ingredient with promising but limited studies.
Side Effects: What to Watch For
Bakuchiol: While generally well-tolerated, some individuals might experience mild irritation or redness, especially when overused.
Retinol: Common side effects include dryness, peeling, redness, and sensitivity. It's crucial to start with a lower concentration and gradually increase usage.

Sea Buckthorn Oil as a Natural Beta-Carotene Source for Skin Health
One of our star organic ingredients used in LILIXIR Ageless Rejuvenating Day Serum is Sea Buckthorn Fruit Oil.
Sea Buckthorn oil is often considered a natural source of beta-carotene, a compound that serves as a precursor to retinol, also known as vitamin A.
While beta-carotene can indeed be converted into retinol by the body, it's essential to understand that this conversion process is not as efficient or direct as using a skincare product formulated with retinol itself. While Sea Buckthorn oil offers some potential benefits for the skin, such as providing antioxidant protection and nourishment, it may not replicate the targeted effects of retinol.
However, for individuals seeking a milder and more natural approach to skincare, sea buckthorn oil can be a gentle alternative to consider. As with any skincare ingredient, its effectiveness can vary from person to person, and it's essential to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional to determine the best options for individual skin needs and concerns.
Your Path to Radiant Skin
In the end, the choice between bakuchiol and retinol depends on your skin's unique needs and your desired level of results. While bakuchiol shows promise, retinol's effectiveness is backed by extensive research. If you're considering introducing these ingredients into your skincare routine, consult a dermatologist to determine the best approach for your skin type and concerns. With the right guidance, you'll be well on your way to achieving the healthy, glowing skin you've always desired.
Remember, the journey to radiant skin is a personalized one, and your choice between bakuchiol and retinol is just one step along the way.
Both retinol and bakuchiol offer potential anti-aging benefits, but they cater to different skin preferences and concerns. Retinol boasts a longer history of research-backed efficacy, while bakuchiol appeals to those seeking a gentler, natural alternative. The choice between the two ingredients ultimately depends on individual skin type, sensitivity, and desired results.
Consulting a dermatologist can provide personalized guidance on incorporating these ingredients into your skincare routine for optimal outcomes.

Our skin is our body's first line of defense, but it can also be quite sensitive. Diluting essential oils with a carrier oil helps reduce this risk, making them much more skin-friendly.

LILIXIR products leverage this understanding by ensuring that the potent compounds in essential oils are balanced through proper dilution, providing maximum benefits without overwhelming the skin.

Understanding and Addressing Your Skin's Needs
Our skin is a remarkable organ that requires care and attention to maintain its health and vitality. However, various factors can contribute to skin concerns that impact our overall complexion. In this blog post, we will explore some of the most common skin concerns individuals face, shedding light on their causes and providing insights into addressing these concerns effectively. By understanding your skin's needs, you can embark on a journey towards healthier, more radiant skin.
Acne is a prevalent skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne is the most common skin disorder in the United States, affecting up to 50 million Americans annually. It is estimated that around 85% of individuals between the ages of 12 and 24 experience acne at some point.
The underlying causes of acne can vary, but it often stems from a combination of factors, including excess sebum production, clogged pores, the presence of bacteria (such as Propionibacterium acnes), hormonal fluctuations, and inflammation. These factors contribute to the formation of various types of acne lesions, including pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and cysts.
When it comes to managing acne, establishing a consistent skincare routine is crucial. This typically involves gentle cleansing to remove dirt, excess oil, and impurities, as well as exfoliation to promote cell turnover and prevent pore blockages. Targeted treatments, according to LILIXIR, such as products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, can help reduce inflammation and unclog pores.
In more severe cases, dermatologists may recommend prescription medications, such as topical retinoids, oral antibiotics, or hormonal therapies, to effectively manage persistent breakouts and prevent long-term scarring. Seeking professional guidance ensures personalized treatment plans tailored to individual needs, increasing the likelihood of achieving clearer skin and improved self-confidence.
Aging is an inevitable part of life, and our skin goes through changes as we grow older. Fine lines, wrinkles, and a loss of elasticity become more noticeable over time. While these signs of aging are natural, certain factors can expedite the process. Sun exposure, environmental pollutants, genetics, and lifestyle choices like smoking and poor nutrition can accelerate the development of wrinkles and other age-related skin concerns.
To address aging concerns and promote graceful aging, it is essential to establish a comprehensive skincare regimen. Look for skincare products that contain ingredients known for their anti-aging properties. Retinol and Bakuchiol are forms of vitamin A, that help to stimulate collagen production and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid provides hydration and plumps the skin, while antioxidants protect against free radicals that can contribute to skin aging. Peptides are also beneficial in promoting firmer, smoother skin.

Hyperpigmentation and dark spots can be a common concern that affects the skin's overall radiance. These darkened areas occur due to an overproduction of melanin, which can be triggered by various factors such as sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation, acne scars, or certain medical conditions.
Restoring the skin's radiance and addressing hyperpigmentation involves incorporating skincare products that target brightening and evening out the skin tone. Ingredients like vitamin C, known for its antioxidant properties, can help inhibit melanin production and fade dark spots over time. Niacinamide is another beneficial ingredient that helps regulate pigment production and improve overall skin texture. Kojic acid is often used in skincare formulations to lighten and reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
Alongside using products with brightening ingredients, it is crucial to practice effective sun protection. Sunscreen is a key component in preventing further darkening of existing spots and protecting the skin from harmful UV rays. Incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine, along with wearing protective clothing and seeking shade when the sun is strongest, can significantly help in preventing the worsening of hyperpigmentation.
By combining the use of skincare products containing brightening ingredients and maintaining diligent sun protection, you can restore your skin's radiance and gradually reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, revealing a more even and glowing complexion.
Dryness and dehydration are common skin concerns that can leave your skin feeling uncomfortable and lacking in moisture. Dry skin is characterized by a lack of natural moisture, resulting in a rough, flaky, or tight sensation. On the other hand, dehydration refers to a temporary condition caused by insufficient water content in the skin.
To nurture your skin's moisture barrier and combat dryness and dehydration, it's important to incorporate hydrating skincare products into your routine. Look for products that contain ingredients known for their moisturizing properties, such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and natural oils. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that attracts and retains moisture in the skin, while ceramides help strengthen the skin's barrier function, preventing moisture loss. Natural oils, like rosehip, jojoba oil or pomegranate oil, can provide nourishment and replenish the skin's hydration levels.
In addition to skincare products, adopting healthy lifestyle habits can contribute to improved skin hydration. Drinking an adequate amount of water throughout the day helps maintain your body's overall hydration, which reflects on your skin. Using a humidifier in dry indoor environments can add moisture to the air and prevent excessive evaporation from your skin. It's also important to avoid prolonged exposure to dry or hot environments, as these can further contribute to skin dryness.
By incorporating hydrating skincare products and adopting moisture-promoting habits, you can effectively nurture your skin's moisture barrier, restoring hydration and achieving a healthier, more supple complexion.
Sensitivity and irritation are common concerns for those with delicate or sensitive skin. Individuals with sensitive skin may experience symptoms such as redness, itching, or a stinging sensation when exposed to certain products or environmental factors. This can be triggered by fragrances, harsh chemicals, allergens, or extreme temperature or weather conditions.
When caring for sensitive skin, it is crucial to choose skincare products specifically formulated for this skin type. Look for products labeled as gentle, hypoallergenic, or formulated for sensitive skin. These products are typically free of known irritants and have undergone testing to ensure their compatibility with sensitive skin.
Patch testing new products before applying them to your entire face is also recommended for individuals with sensitive skin. This involves applying a small amount of the product to a small patch of skin, such as behind the ear or on the inner forearm, and monitoring the area for any adverse reactions or irritation. This helps determine if the product is suitable for your skin and minimizes the risk of a widespread reaction.
For personalized guidance and a tailored skincare routine, consulting with a dermatologist is highly beneficial. They can help identify potential triggers for sensitivity, recommend specific products or ingredients to avoid, and provide further guidance in nurturing and maintaining the health of your delicate skin.
By choosing gentle, irritant-free products and taking necessary precautions, you can effectively nurture and care for your sensitive skin, minimizing the risk of irritation and maintaining a calm, balanced complexion.

Facial oils offer many benefits for the skin. They help to moisturize the skin, reduce dryness, soothe inflammation, fight wrinkles and fine lines, nourish skin cells, and provide a protective barrier against environmental damage.
Natural plant oils are frequently applied topically directly on the skin to work their magic. Usually they are convenient skincare products, easy to use, and reasonably priced skin care choices.
Oils can be extracted using a variety of techniques, such as cold pressing to create unrefined oils, heat and chemical distillation to create essential oils, and the addition of various compounds to create fragranced oils.
Never use undiluted essential oils, topically or internally.
Natural oils include components with antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties, making them appealing alternatives and complementing treatments for inflammatory dermatoses linked to the skin-barrier repair.
Oil-based serums and facial oils are similar to each other, but serums would include more concentrated ingredients, exclusive, rare and finer oils. Also, the formulations are more complicated, containing more high-performance ingredients and plant-based extracts, all dedicated to solving one specific skin concern.
Facial oils based serums are blends of carrier or botanical oils, macerated oils, essential oils and CO2 oil extracts. Most often they are applied at night when they can slowly seep into the skin and work their magic while you are sleeping. Light and dry facial oils can be used in the morning before the moisturizer to seal the hydration close to the skin.
Many facial oils also contain antioxidants, which help protect the skin from free radical damage, as well as essential fatty acids, which help repair damaged skin cells. Facial oils are particularly useful for those with dry or sensitive skin, as they provide a layer of nourishing protection. Additionally, facial oils provide a luxurious and relaxing experience when used in a facial massage.
The benefits of natural oils for barrier restoration are mostly determined by the different essential fatty acid ratios present in them. While oils with higher concentrations of oleic acid may be harmful to the function of the skin barrier, oils with a higher linoleic acid to oleic acid ratio have a better potential for barrier healing.
When choosing an oil for skin care, the quality of oils, the method of oil processing and refinement are crucial. Cold pressing is the ideal method of oil extraction because the chemical- and heat-free procedure maintains essential lipids and reduces irritant byproducts.
Facial oils are applied in a few drops to the face and massaged as a moisturizer.
Certain oils can take a long time to penetrate the top layers of the skin, so it’s worth researching the ones that are best suited for your skin.
Dry oils such as rosehip, safflower, jojoba etc. absorb very quickly, while grapeseed oil or avocado oil can take longer.
Because oils are anhydrous products and they don’t come into contact with water, there is no need for preservation. Instead, they need an antioxidant to prevent them from going rancid too quickly.
Antioxidants you will see most often in oil serums are Vitamin E oil or rosemary extract.
Take a look at our oil-based serums and their exquisite 100% certified organic ingredients: LILIXIR Ageless Rejuvenating Day Serum and LILIXIR Ageless Rejuvenating Night Serum.

The majority of products on the market now are created with chemicals that have been around for decades. Since then, researchers have discovered that a large number of these compounds are linked to conditions like cancer, asthma, birth abnormalities, and infertility.
You use some of these chemicals every day in items like skincare, shampoo, detergent, furniture, etc. There is frequently no legal requirements for manufacturers to declare their entire list of ingredients on product packaging or websites, making it impossible for consumers to know what they are actually purchasing.
If you look on a company website at the product description and you cannot find the entire list of ingredients, but only a few of them, this should ring a bell. It means they are hiding something.
This is often the case within the beauty industry, when companies that have been on the market for ages and have already gained your trust, are not entirely transparent.
At LILIXIR, we value full transparency, full ingredient disclosure on the labels, warnings and publishing the research sources. This is a prove LILIXIR is a brand you can trust.
What does Natural, Organic and Cruelty-Free mean? Are they synonyms with Vegan, Plant-Based and Chemical-Free?
The term "natural" from “Natural Skin Care” is not a legally regulated term in beauty industry. A product labeled "natural" or "with natural ingredients" can still contain a high percentage of synthetic ingredients.
The term “natural skin care” can mean different things and each brand can choose what “natural” means for them.
There’s a lot of debate in the industry on what’s considered ‘natural’ and what’s not.
Often, natural ingredients can be inconsistent in makeup and skincare, so it’s hard to measure effectiveness and potency. As well, some natural ingredients, like essential oils, can cause irritation to the skin, if they are not correctly used in formulations.
This type of ingredients are used in their natural, unprocessed state. Examples of naturally-occurring ingredients include raw honey, crushed flowers or cold-pressed oils.
Nature-identical ingredients used in skincare products are produced in a lab and are chemically identical to those that occur in nature. An example is sorbic acid. Originally derived from rowan berries, sorbic acid is now often obtained in a lab and commonly included as a nature-identical ingredient.
Some companies might call they products "organic" while they don't actually have an "Organic Certification" or even, what's more disappointing, when a half of their ingredients are also not certified organic. To legally display on label that your product is "organic" you need a certification from a tertiary company like USDA Organic, Canada Organic, Ecocert, etc.
Vegan-certified cosmetic product is defined as containing no animal ingredients or by-products, using no animal ingredients or by-products in the manufacturing process. But also, vegan does not necessarily mean plan-based, these products can incluse synthetic ingredients (not animal derived).
In order to obtain a Cruelty-Free certification, companies must commit to ending animal testing at all stages of product development, in addition to re-committing to the program each year and being open to third-party audits. Not all companies that claim to be cruelty-free have obtained a Cruelty-Free Certification. Check out their website.
Here is LILIXIR Cruelty-Free Certification provided by Leaping Bunny Program.
Many skincare brands are trying to represent themselves as safe to consumers, so they claim they sell “chemical-free” beauty products, when in reality even water is a chemical and has a chemical composition!
There are no Chemical-Free products.
This term is at the extreme end of the spectrum and includes ingredients that have been created and processed in the laboratory. An example of this is parabens or phenoxyethanol, which are common synthetic preservatives.
"Free from Parabens, Phthalates, Alcohol, GMO etc." are trendy claims in the beauty and cosmetic industry.
We believe because certain of the above components (like parabens) are safe when used according to the Cosmetics Regulations, the use of these type of claims is denigrating other brands.
At LILIXIR, we are proud to talk about only what is inside of the bottle, and not about what is not, or it should not be there in the first place.
How is LILIXIR different?
At LILIXIR, we are not against synthetic ingredients. Plant-based and clean, for us it's all about avoiding any potentially harmful and toxic ingredients. What we would like to emphasize is more transparency. We believe companies should be more honest when marketing their products and not only talk about a few plant-based and certified organic ingredients in their products.
It is just dishonest to call your product natural when it contains Retinol, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance etc. Even if these ingredients might be safe and good for your skin, they are still synthetically obtained in a lab. Similarly, you may not call your products "organic" unless you obtained a certification from a tertiary company like USDA Organic, Canada Organic, Ecocert, etc.
LILIXIR values the power of natural compounds contained in plants, used in medicine for centuries. We think our skin can really benefit from the compounds that, for example, leaves use to stay green, or blueberries to stay blue, or the ability of desert plants to withstand high temperatures and sun exposure without water. The antioxidant capacity of some plants, the moisturizing effects and the advantageous rejuvenating properties from others are highly appreciated at LILIXIR.

Increasing environmental pollution is causing more and more concerns for public health. It is well known that air pollution reduces quality of health and lowers life expectancy.
The term "pollution" refers to environmental small poison particles that you are exposed to through the air, water, food, and even through your skin.
It is almost impossible to calculate the amount of pollution you are exposed to on a daily basis, because the air changes constantly. What we do know is that as long as people consume, the toxins increase globally, and we are being exposed to an increasing amount of pollution every day.
The impact that these pollutants may have on your skin depends on how frequently you are exposed to the environment. This exposure, according to LILIXIR, will differ from person to person, from geographical location, the urban on rural area, to the type of job they do on a daily basis. Especially, if you live in big polluted cities, it is extremely possible that your skin is exposed to severe pollution every day.
There are many different types of pollutants, from some atmosphere brought substances like ozone or nitrogen dioxide, to industrial waste products like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and nanoparticles.
LILIXIR believes there is no doubt that your skin is exposed to significant pollution every single day, especially if you reside in big cities.
According to research, pollution has the following negative effects on your skin:
1. Increases the rate of sebum secretion and decreases the level of your skin pH, which is one of the main causes of acne and other skin issue.
2. Lowers the Squalene and Vitamin E level in your skin. These are two main antioxidants at the surface of the skin that are responsible for the wound-healing processes, and the cause of oxidative stress. Dry skin, which may be a side effect of pollution, is typically associated with low levels of these two antioxidants.
3. Increases the level of Lactic Acid of your skin, that can lead to problematic skin.
Since you do not only ingest environmental pollutants through your food and air, but also absorb them through your skin, LILIXIR, a Canadian natural beauty company, claims that the skin is a crucial barrier in the fight with the impacts of pollution on our bodies.
Anti-pollution cosmetics are a popular new trend, says LILIXIR, and they are in high demand in countries where environmental pollution is a serious issue in many major cities. Numerous research that looked at how pollution affects skin ageing came up with some well defined conclusions.
According to LILIXIR, the ideal way to care of your skin is to maintain a good skin-barrier function, which aims to prevent as many contaminants as possible from penetrating your skin. It is important to pay attention to your skin microbiome health.
Pollution inhibits the effectiveness of the skin's barrier by oxidizing the lipid layer and breaking down the collagen.
The majority of the time, smog's particles are too large to penetrate the skin, so they stay at the surface of your skin, but they can still disrupt your skin's protective layer. Consequently, this can lead to dehydration, irritation, uneven skin tone, dullness, acne, and premature ageing.
LILIXIR believes that managing the possible negative effects of pollution on your skin requires consistency and good quality topical skincare products, which in turn do not further pollute the environment through plastic packaging.
According to research, the world's most polluted regions tend to have higher rates of skin issues. The effects of pollution on the deep layers of the skin are currently still being studied.
1. Cleansing with gentile natural beauty products (hydrating foam cleanser, oil-based cleansers, oleo-gels, etc.).
2. Deep and surface hydration (serums, moisturizers)
3. Topical and ingestible antioxidants (Vitamin E, Squalene)
4. Detoxifying elements (charcoal, clay mask, gel-to-milk masque, etc.).
5. A correct and consistent skincare routine - download "A step-by-step guide to naturally glowing skin by LILIXIR". It contains everything you need to know about how to properly take care of your skin.
There is no skincare product that "fights pollution" per say. Skincare products can help you clean your skin, hydrate, moisturize and improve your skin barrier. All skincare products and a consistent skincare routine will protect your skin against pollution.
LILIXIR has spent the last few years developing and testing a Premium line of organic and natural skincare products - LILIXIR Ageless Rejuvenating Serums Collection to help you increase your skin barrier which plays a big role against environmental pollution.

Cleansing your skin twice a day with a gentle cleanser, as we say at LILIXIR, will remove dirt, skin residue in the form of dead cells, excess oil and leave your skin looking healthy and radiant.
Cleansing increases blood flow and circulation, especially if you wash in a circular motion or massage yourself a little.
In addition, on clean skin, cosmetic treatments act more effectively.
The high performance active ingredients would simply sit on your skin and not be unable to perform their intended functions without thorough cleansing.
There are many different types of cleansers on the market, to suit all skin types and preferences.
Water alone may not be able to:
🔹Remove makeup and dead skin cells
🔹Remove oil, dirt and other pollutants
🔹Cleanse pores and prevent skin conditions such as acne.
There are multiple types of facial cleanser, just choose the one you like the most:
- Foaming cleanser
- Gel cleanser
- Gel-to-milk cleanser
- Lotion cleanser
- Oil based cleanser

One of the major challenges of the twenty-first century is the fight against ageing, which is defined as a set of physiological mechanisms that alter human physical and intellectual capacities.
Skin is a complex organ covering the entire surface of the body. Wrinkles, suppleness, and uneven pigmentation are characteristics of ageing skin.
Intrinsic ageing is about the genetic background of each person. This form of ageing is inevitable and impossible to somehow slow it down through changes in human behaviour.
Extrinsic ageing is dictated by the external factors to which our body is exposed, such as smoking, excessive alcohol, air quality, nutrition, and sun exposure. At LILIXIR we believe all these factors lead to premature skin ageing.
Sun exposure is considered to be the most significantly deleterious to the skin. As much as 80% of facial ageing is believed to be due to chronic sun exposure.
The sun helps people's health by facilitating the skin's own natural production of vitamin D and endorphins. However, excessive UV exposure poses serious risks to the health of the skin, including pigmentary changes, wrinkling, and cancer. Dermatologists advise using UV protection all year round, every day, even in winter or on cloudy days.
According to studies, pollution can speed up sebum production while lowering your skin pH, which is one of the key contributors to acne and other skin problems. Bad air quality and pollution reduces the amount of vitamin E and squalene in your skin. These are the two primary antioxidants at the skin's surface that promote wound healing and are the root of oxidative stress. Low levels of these two antioxidants are often linked to dry skin, which may be a side effect of pollution.

Lifestyle factors, such as consistent exercise and a healthy diet, can slow down the ageing process. Diet, food choices, and dietary habits all affect healthy ageing. Consult a dietitian, increase your water consumption, eat more vegetables, and reduce the amount of sweets and fats you consume.
It has been determined that smoking and alcohol are habits that pose serious health concerns. They can result in a number of degenerative dermatologic disorders, including skin ageing and improper wound healing.
A pro-inflammatory condition, which is known to be induced by stress and sleep deprivation, compromises your skin, particularly collagen production.
Chronic poor sleep quality is associated with increased signs of intrinsic ageing, dark circles under eye, diminished skin barrier function and lower satisfaction with appearance.
Expression wrinkles develop over time as a result of frequent facial movements like frowning and smiling. They leave a mark on the skin of the face in places like the corners of the eyes, the forehead, the glabella, and around the mouth.
The ageing of the skin is only one visible aspect of this process. It is associated with significant healing defects, which are linked in part to changes in the biomechanical properties of skin cells, particularly dermal fibroblasts. Beneficial anti-aging skincare formulations can help slow down the process by hydrating and nourishing the skin, improving the microbiome health and the skin barrier repair.
Cosmeceuticals such as LILIXIR organic and natural beauty products are filled with plant-based extracts that can help improve cell response to signals such as growth factors, stimulate collagen genes, neutralize free radicals, and decrease breakdown of collagen and elastin.
Our underestimated organic certified skincare ingredients are the gold of skincare: healthy, friendly with the skin, nourishing, safe and the purest essence of anti-aging treatments.

When it comes to skincare, we often focus on external factors like moisturizers and cleansers. However, there's a hidden world on our skin's surface that plays a crucial role in its health and radiance—the skin microbiome.
In this blog post, we will explore the significance of the skin microbiome, the importance of the skin barrier, environmental protection functions, and provide tips on protecting, restoring, and improving your skin microbiome.
The skin microbiome refers to the diverse ecosystem of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that reside on our skin's surface. These microscopic inhabitants play a vital role in maintaining skin health by supporting its barrier function and protecting against harmful pathogens.
Your skin is colonized by a diverse microbiota. It is home to a diverse milieu of bacteria, fungi, viruses, bacteriophages, and archaeal communities.
These microorganisms vary between individuals and between different parts of the body. The factors responsible for the unique variability of the skin microbiome are: the environment, genetics and lifestyle.
A balanced and diverse skin microbiome is crucial for a healthy complexion, as it helps regulate inflammation, supports wound healing, and aids in the production of essential components like fatty acids and antimicrobial peptides.
The skin barrier, also known as the stratum corneum, acts as the first line of defense against external stressors. It consists of lipids, proteins, and cells that create a protective shield, preventing excessive moisture loss and shielding the skin from environmental aggressors.
Functioning as the exterior interface of the human body with the environment, skin acts as a physical barrier to prevent the invasion of foreign pathogens while providing a home to the commensal microbiota.
The skin microbiome prefers a relatively acidic environment, around pH 5.0, which also inhibits the growth of pathogens.
Several factors involved in epidermal cell development and proliferation, cell-cell adhesion, and skin lipids may affect the integrity of the epidermal barrier. Eczema is one of the skin conditions that can result from this barrier damage. On the other hand, eczema can harm the epidermal barrier.
A well-functioning skin barrier helps maintain proper hydration levels, prevents irritants from penetrating the skin, and supports the health of the skin microbiome.
The skin is constantly exposed to various internal or external factors that may impact its barrier function at the physical, mechanical, immunological, and microbial levels.
These factors can contribute to divers inflammatory skin conditions, especially those associated with barrier dysfunction. The barrier function of the skin depends upon a symbiotic relationship between resident microbial communities and host tissue.
Recent research indicates that both bacterial diversity and the abundance of different microbes on the skin, may contribute to skin barrier stability or dysfunction.
Factors that influence the skin microbiome
Genetics: Each individual's genetics can determine the composition and diversity of their skin microbiome.
Hygiene Practices: Excessive or harsh cleansing can disrupt the balance of the skin microbiome, while inadequate hygiene can lead to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria.
Environmental Factors: The environment we live in, such as climate, pollution levels, and UV radiation, can impact the diversity and health of the skin microbiome.
Age: The skin microbiome evolves throughout life, with variations seen in infancy, adolescence, and adulthood. Aging also affects the diversity and stability of the microbiome.
Diet and Nutrition: A balanced and nutritious diet can positively influence the composition of the skin microbiome. Conversely, a diet high in processed foods and sugars may disrupt its balance.
Medications and Treatments: Certain medications, such as antibiotics and topical corticosteroids, can disrupt the skin microbiome. Similarly, invasive skincare treatments like chemical peels and laser resurfacing can temporarily affect the microbiome.
Stress and Mental Health: Psychological stress can alter the skin's microbial composition and compromise its barrier function, impacting the microbiome.
Products and Cosmetics: Skincare products, including cleansers, moisturizers, and makeup, can affect the skin microbiome depending on their ingredients and formulation.
Microbial Exposure: Interactions with other individuals, animals, and the surrounding environment contribute to the diversity and composition of the skin microbiome.
It's important to note that these factors can interact with one another and have complex relationships, further influencing the skin microbiome. Understanding these factors can help guide skincare practices that promote a healthy and balanced microbiome.
To protect and support your skin microbiome, it's essential to adopt healthy skincare habits. Avoid using harsh cleansers and excessive exfoliation, as these can disrupt the balance of the microbiome. Choose gentle, pH-balanced cleansers and incorporate prebiotic and probiotic skincare products into your routine. Prebiotics provide nourishment for the beneficial bacteria, while probiotics introduce beneficial microorganisms to the skin.
Beneficial skincare formulation could influence your skin health by moisturizing, re-fatting and regenerating the epidermal skin barrier, thus maintaining healthy skin and supporting the natural skin microbiome.

Additionally, protect your skin from UV radiation, pollution, and other environmental stressors by using broad-spectrum sunscreen and antioxidant-rich skincare products.
If your skin microbiome has been compromised, it's possible to restore and improve its health. Start by being patient, as it can take time for the microbiome to rebalance.
Avoid overusing antibacterial products and antibiotics, as they can disrupt the microbiome further. Instead, focus on nourishing and repairing the skin barrier by incorporating ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and essential fatty acids into your skincare routine. Additionally, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fermented foods can support a healthy microbiome from within.
The skin microbiome and its delicate balance play a crucial role in maintaining skin health and radiance. By understanding the importance of the skin barrier, environmental protection functions, and adopting healthy skincare habits, you can protect, restore, and improve your skin microbiome.

A facial mask might be considered skin food!!!
A masque is a rinse-off treatment that you apply to your skin, wait 5 to 20 minutes for it to dry or activate (depending on the ingredients), and then remove with a cloth or wash before moisturizing.
Although skincare firms are not permitted to make any medical or healing claims for their products, a good face masque can be used to treat and soothe your skin.
Instead of "toxins," facial masques remove dirt, filth, and pollutants. Clays, in particular, have the ability to bind particles together, allowing them to penetrate deeply into the pores. External clay facial mask application is a cosmetic procedure used to reduce skin lesions and improve overall skin condition.
A good facial masque is both a cleanser and a skin treatment. Masques exfoliate dead skin layers from the face's surface. Some masques can also be left on for a longer period of time. A masque can also be a cotton sheet mask that is applied to the skin and removed after a period of time.
This results in a smoother, more youthful complexion while also reducing the appearance of dull skin. Masques may contain ingredients that draw blood to the skin's surface, improving tone and encouraging skin regeneration.
Apply the mask immediately after cleansing, especially if it requires rinsing off (like an exfoliating or detoxifying mask). Apply the mask before your moisturizer if it needs to be left on for the entire night.
A good facial masque should result in quick apparent and obvious benefits in the skin. Face masques have traditionally been created with clays and muds that have a drawing effect on the face, drawing impurities out and giving the skin a deep clean.
If you have a problematic skin and you often get acne In order to help unclog pores, look for masks that contain salicylic acid and other AHA/BHAs. Products with clay and charcoal in them have the potential to pull toxins and impurities from pores without drying out the skin.
The classic kind of beauty masques are clay masques, which are applied to the skin and then harden as the clay draws out the water and any dirt or impurities from the skin. The consumer then uses a washcloth to wipe off the clay, leaving the skin feeling fresh and taut.
A clay masque has a delicious and cooling sensation, and because of its consistency, you can apply a thick layer to the skin. Clay masques may also include various botanical powders that could provide additional advantages in terms of color and botanical extracts.
The best way to deliver high performance cosmeceuticals to your skin is with a lotion cream masques.
The cream can also be in the form of a thin emulsion, but you will need to use a lot of it because it will otherwise quickly sink into your skin's top layers during application and cannot be rinsed off.
The aim here is to give high performance cosmeceuticals. In order for the ingredients in this type of masques to effectively perform their functions, we advise you to keep the cream masques on overnight.
Gel masques have a gelatinous consistency and are cooling masques.
They provide the skin that "tightening" sensation and let you experience the temporary lifting or tightening of your skin in particular areas of the face.
A gel can be used as a leave-on or rinse-off product, depending on your skin needs and preference. It can be applied to the face overnight. Gels are frequently thought of as clear, but there are also colored and opaque gels masques that contain colored botanical powders and extracts such as matcha, cacao, turmeric etc.
Anhydrous masques with a unique cold process emulsifier are what are known as gel-to-milk masques. Upon coming into touch with water, they instantly emulsify and produce runny, milky water. This procedure makes it very simple for you to rinse the masque.
We recommend alternating between two to three different masques and using them 1-2 times per week.
After that it is mandatory to use a serum or a moisturizer (or both) to hydrate very well your skin.
Check out our LILIXIR Ageless Collection of serums made entirely with organic and natural ingredients to deeply repair the skin cells, providing firmness and youthful luminosity at the same time. These serums are perfect for replenishing your skin after a facial masque.

In the realm of skincare, the quest for youthful and radiant skin is an eternal pursuit. As we navigate the world of beauty products, it's crucial to understand the underlying science behind skincare ingredients. Two terms that often come up in skincare discussions are "oxidation" and "antioxidants." In this blog post, we'll delve into the world of oxidation and antioxidants and explore their role in maintaining healthy and glowing skin.
Oxidation is a natural chemical process that occurs when molecules interact with oxygen. In the context of skincare, oxidation can be detrimental to our skin's health and appearance. When exposed to environmental factors like pollution, UV radiation, and even stress, our skin undergoes oxidative stress. This stress results in the formation of free radicals, unstable molecules that can damage cells and accelerate the aging process. Oxidation can manifest as dullness, fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone, leading to a lackluster complexion.
Oxidation is the loss of electrons by a molecule, atom or ion. In other words, oxidation is the process of degradation caused by the light and oxygen. It can also mean the gain of oxygen, or the loss of hydrogen.
A free radical is an atom, molecule or ion that has unpaired electrons. In general, these unpaired electrons make free radicals highly chemically reactive towards other substances, or even towards themselves.
Free radicals have somehow lost an electron. They can be formed during normal functions such as when cells burn food for energy or even when the body is fighting off bacteria or viruses.
Free radicals in general are not dangerous. But when our cells are exposed to pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke or certain chemicals, this process creates a larger quantity of free radicals in the body: a surplus of unbalanced cells looking to become balanced by scavenging for electrons.
They will actually “steal” electrons from balanced cells and set off a chain reaction of damage. If there are no electrons available, or if free radical production is in excess, damage occurs and creates an environment of oxidative stress.
Antioxidants act as the superheroes in the skincare world, combating the damaging effects of oxidation. These powerful compounds neutralize free radicals, effectively reducing oxidative stress and preventing skin damage. Antioxidants can be found naturally in various skincare ingredients, such as vitamins C and E, green tea extract, resveratrol, and coenzyme Q10, among others. By incorporating antioxidant-rich products into your skincare routine, you provide your skin with essential reinforcements to fight against the daily onslaught of oxidative stress.
The inclusion of antioxidants in skincare products offers a myriad of benefits. Firstly, antioxidants help to protect the skin from environmental aggressors, minimizing the damage caused by pollution, UV radiation, and other external factors. Secondly, antioxidants assist in neutralizing free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and slowing down the aging process. This can result in a more youthful and radiant complexion, with diminished signs of fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. Furthermore, antioxidants often have soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, making them beneficial for those with sensitive or reactive skin.
An antioxidant effectively inhibits the oxidation of other molecules, which means they don’t turn into free radicals. They are key ingredients in preventing skin ageing - not in treating wrinkles, because the damage has already been caused.
Antioxidants can be oil-soluble, like Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamin E or they can be water-soluble, such as ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), green tea, coffeeberry and resveratrol.
To reap the rewards of antioxidants, it's important to incorporate them into your skincare routine strategically. Look for products containing antioxidant-rich ingredients like vitamin C serums, green tea-infused moisturizers, or antioxidant-packed face masks. Additionally, a balanced and healthy diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole foods, can provide your body with internal sources of antioxidants. Remember to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional to determine the most suitable products and ingredients for your skin type and concerns.
LILIXIR Ageless Day Serum and LILIXIR Ageless Night Serum are packed full with antioxidants that will prevent the skin ageing. Beside that they create a film on the surface of the skin, blocking the water inside, enhancing the penetration.
In conclusion, oxidation and antioxidants play a crucial role in the world of skincare, with oxidation being a primary culprit behind skin damage and aging. By harnessing the power of antioxidants, we can counteract the effects of oxidative stress, promoting healthier and more youthful-looking skin. Embrace the wonders of antioxidants in your skincare routine, and unlock the secret to a radiant complexion that stands the test of time.
